May 2, 2018
The Master of Science in Finance student chronicles his untraditional journey to Vanderbilt in the last podcast of the academic year

By Kara Sherrer

The monthly Humans of Owen events have become a fixture of the Vanderbilt Business community, giving students, faculty, and staff a chance to share their stories. We wanted to give our podcast listeners a taste of Humans of Owen, so we sat down with a few people to share their stories.

First up is Joshua Carlile, a Master of Science in Finance student who once thought he might never get a chance to go college — and ended up getting a master’s degree at his dream university. He talks about:

  • Growing up in a large family and how that impacted his thoughts about college
  • Realizing he wanted to get a master’s degree in finance, and having to leave his job to pursue that dream
  • Driving around the country and living out of his car to interview at finance programs
  • Getting into Vanderbilt off the waitlist — and convincing several of his family members to apply to other Vanderbilt programs
