Key Policies
As a member of the Owen community, it is important to be aware of how your actions affect the entire community. In an effort to ensure that one individual's actions will not have negative repercussions for the entire student body, the CMC has established four policies for which you will be held accountable.
Failure to follow these policies may result in partial or 100% loss of CMC privileges, at the discretion of the director.
- A student will notify the Employer Relations & Recruiting Team at least 48 hours prior to missing an interview by emailing: owencmcrecruiting@vanderbilt.edu. The only exceptions are acceptance of an offer or emergencies such as death of a family member, an accident, or extreme illness.
- A student will discontinue all forms of recruiting once he or she has accepted an offer (written or verbal). Please notify the CMC when you have accepted your offer, and report that offer here in 12Twenty.
- A student will not renege on an offer once it has been accepted, regardless if the position was school-facilitated or student-facilitated. If a student has any concerns about accepting an offer, please discuss the situation with the CMC before accepting an offer. Accepting an offer verbally is as contractually binding as a written acceptance.
The most important thing to remember is to communicate with the CMC immediately should you have any concerns about an offer you are considering.
- A student will not misrepresent academic, work, or extra-curricular experience during the job search process. This includes making false or deliberately misleading statements on one's resume or in an interview.
Recruiting Protocols
- You are the primary individual responsible for the success of your job search. The CMC is here to coach and advise and be a sounding board, but ultimately you are in the driver's seat!
- You will keep the CMC updated on your internship and full-time job search by meeting or communicating with your CMC coach regularly. You will update them when you have an offer.
Info Sessions
Company presentations where employers highlight their competitive advantage as an employer of business school talent. Student gains more information about the company and the roles for which the company is recruiting.
- Be on time. It is unacceptable to be late.
- You have access to cancel in the system 48 hours prior to an info session. Note: the employer has the list of who has registered, so your absence is noticed and reflects poorly on the school.
- Once you attend an Information Session, you should stay until the end.
- Ask questions during Information Sessions—that is why the companies are here. However, please ask general interest questions in the group setting; questions that are only of interest to you should be saved for a one-on-one discussion. When you are called on be sure to state your name prior to asking the question.
- It is appropriate to pass out your business card at Information Sessions; resumes are generally not handed out at Information Sessions. If a contact wants your resume, they will ask for it.
- Realize that the Information Session is for everyone; don't dominate the discussion or monopolize one-on-one time with recruiters.
- Be aware of perceptions—you are representing Owen as well as yourself. Avoid rude and inappropriate behavior. It reflects negatively on us all.
- Be polite and attentive in the information sessions (keep your cell phone off or on silent).
- Wear appropriate attire at recruiting events. Appropriate dress attire for Information Sessions will be posted in 12Twenty and is typically Business Formal (suit), Business Casual (no tie/jacket), and Smart Casual (collared shirt). For interviews, we strongly suggest only business attire.
Coffee Chats/ Office Hours
Short 15 to 20-minute one-on-one or small group appointments with a company representative. This is a chance to connect and network further with the company while learning more about the role, culture, etc.
- Please be mindful when registering as there are a limited number of slots available.
- Canceling a RSVP will vary based on how the employer has set up the schedule, so if you need to cancel for emergency reasons, please reach out to Employer Relations & Recruiting Team (owencmcrecruiting@vanderbilt.edu).
- Be on time. It is unacceptable to be late.
- Come prepared with a set of questions for the company representative(s). They will have your resume, but it is also good to bring a fresh copy (if an in-person appointment)
- You may have a one-on-one appointment or an appointment with several of your peers. If it is a group coffee chat, be inclusive and engaged.
- Be polite and attentive in the coffee chat (keep your cell phone off or on silent).
