Biography

Daniel A. Cohen is a Professor of Accounting in the Owen School of Management at Vanderbilt University. Daniel joined Owen in 2022 from Texas A&M University’s Mays Business School where he was a Professor and the Arthur Andersen & Co. Chair in Accounting. Prior to that, he was the Ashbel Smith Professor of Accounting and the Accounting Area Coordinator at the Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas. He was also a faculty member at NYU and USC. Daniel’s research focuses on the relation between corporate governance mechanisms and financial reporting & disclosure decisions. He has published in leading accounting journals, including Journal of Accounting and Economics, The Accounting Review, Review of Accounting Studies, and Contemporary Accounting Research. He currently serves as an Editor for Contemporary Accounting Research and as an associate editor for Journal of Accounting and Public Policy. In the past, he was an associate editor for the Journal of Accounting and Economics (2009-2018) and served on the editorial boards of The Accounting Review (2009-2018), Contemporary Accounting Research (2009-2017) and Asia Pacific Journal of Accounting and Economics (2015-2018). Daniel is one of the awards recipients of the 2022 Distinguished Contribution to Accounting Literature Award.

Awards & Accomplishments

Recipient of the 2022 Distinguished Contribution to Accounting Literature Award. He also received numerous awards for his service to the accounting profession – Daniel was recently the recipient of two best discussant awards as well as a best reviewer award for the Contemporary Accounting Research journal.

Leadership

Daniel serves as an Editor for Contemporary Accounting Research and on the editorial board of Journal of Accounting and Public Policy. In the past, he was an associate editor for the Journal of Accounting and Economics and served on the editorial boards of The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research and Asia Pacific Journal of Accounting and Economics.

Teaching

Daniel teaches various courses in cost accounting,  financial reporting, managerial accounting, and financial statement analysis. He also taught numerous PhD level seminars.

Research Interests

Professor Cohen’s research focuses on the relation between corporate governance mechanisms and financial reporting & disclosure decisions.
