We are a business school embedded in a world-renowned university, rising nationally and globally, with the resources and reach to build what’s next in business and beyond.
The Vanderbilt University Owen Graduate School of Management, known as Vanderbilt Business, is a business school embedded in a world-renowned research university, with a mission of creating opportunities to discover, grow, and thrive in business and beyond.
Founded in 1969 as the Graduate School of Management, the school began with 10 students and 10 faculty members in a renovated funeral home. It was renamed in 1977 in honor of Ralph "Peck" Owen, a former chairman of American Express, and his wife, Lulu Hampton Owen.
The AACSB-accredited school is located in Nashville, Tennessee, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the U.S. and a thriving hub for healthcare, real estate, and music and entertainment. The city's dynamic business community offers students abundant opportunities for experiential learning, and more than 500 recruiting relationships connect them with leading companies in Nashville and around the world. The school is also growing beyond Nashville, with a presence at Vanderbilt's New York City campus and future West Palm Beach campus.
Vanderbilt Business offers programs for every career stage, including Full-Time MBA, Evening MBA, Executive MBA, MS Finance, MS Marketing, Master of Accountancy, Master of Management, Master of Management in Health Care, and MS Business and Technology degrees. The school manages the Hoogland Undergraduate Business Program, a business minor that pairs business fundamentals with electives from Vanderbilt's four undergraduate schools. It also offers the Accelerator® Summer Business Immersion for undergraduates and delivers open enrollment and custom Executive Education programs for individuals and organizations.
The school is home to the Center for Entrepreneurship, elevated by a $20 million gift in 2025; the Undergraduate Center for Finance, established in 2026 with a $25 million gift; the Hans Stoll Financial Markets Research Center; and the Center for Social Ventures.
Currently, Vanderbilt Business serves more than 600 graduate students and more than 1,200 Hoogland Undergraduate Business Program students and is supported by a global community of more than 13,000 alumni in 101 countries.

Fifty years ago, Vanderbilt launched its graduate business program with an ambitious, and perhaps unprecedented, goal in mind: To build a world-class management school that would defy hidebound academic tradition.

“No longer do we think of ourselves as young and struggling. We are there. We have arrived.” - Dean Sam Richmond, 1980

Owen’s third decade was the first that began with the school in strong position on a broad range of fronts.

Owen was humming at the beginning of its fourth decade.

The school increasingly recognized the value of its distinctive brand — and proudly advertised that distinctiveness to the world.
From the moment you arrive, you'll notice something different about Vanderbilt Business. Our mission shapes everything from how we teach to how we connect, while our values drive how we see the world of business and how we equip future business leaders.
