Recruiting at Vanderbilt Business

The following policies are designed to support a successful recruiting experience for both employers and students. Failure to follow these guidelines may negatively impact your employment brand on campus, as students often discuss their experiences with their peers.

If you have any questions about recruiting at Vanderbilt, please contact your Employer Relations & Recruiting team.

Interview Eligibility & Timing

Only current, full-time, degree-seeking students are eligible to participate in interviews and recruiting activities coordinated through the Employer Relations and Recruiting Team.

Employers should connect with the Employer Relations and Recruiting Team to ensure compliance with recruiting timelines.

Recruiting Process Expectations

  • Communication Expectations

Because the programs are rigorous, employers should make every effort to accommodate class and interview schedules. Employers are expected to keep both students and the CMC informed throughout the hiring process, including updates on callbacks, offers, and acceptances.

  • Second-Round Interviews

Companies must provide students with a choice of at least two second-round interview dates and give at least three business days’ notice for interviews or events. Students invited to visit a company should be reimbursed promptly for all expenses.

  • Cancellation of Recruiting

The CMC requests that companies who cancel a recruiting schedule communicate that information directly to the students. We will assist in this process but believe that such communication is more appropriate coming from the company in order to maintain the firm’s credibility in the minds of students and alumni.

  • Disclosure of Non-Compliance

We reserve the right to provide information to students that may be pertinent to their employment and recruiting decisions. We will collect and evaluate information so students are informed of past employer relationships with Owen. Our goal is to immediately resolve issues with employers while supporting students in their career development.

Offer & Acceptance Policies

  • Withdrawing Offers or Acceptances

If an employer must withdraw an offer, the CMC should be notified immediately.

Similarly, if a student withdraws acceptance, the CMC should be informed so the situation can be assessed.

Withdrawing offers or acceptances without cause is considered unethical behavior.

  • Delayed Start Dates

Delaying agreed-upon start dates is strongly discouraged. Employers should notify the CMC immediately if this situation arises.

  • Offer Guidelines

Exploding offers, defined as giving a candidate an unreasonably short period of time to accept an offer before it is revoked, are prohibited. All offers must include an official offer letter, and the offer timeline begins on the date of that letter.

  • Exceptions

If faster decision timelines are required, employers should notify the CMC. If a student is taking an unreasonably long time to respond to an offer, employers are encouraged to contact the CMC so the situation can be addressed. Student offer situations are handled individually between the employer and CMC.

Nondiscrimination Policy

In compliance with federal law including the provisions of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Sections 503 and 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Vanderbilt University does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, religion, color, national or ethnic origin, age, disability or military service in its administration of educational policies, programs or activities; its admissions policies; scholarship and loan programs; athletic or other University-administered programs; or employment.
