A team from the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management placed third in an inaugural health service case competition held at Northwestern University over the weekend of April 29.
The 2011 Health Service Case Competition was the first of what the recently formed Business School Alliance for Healthcare Management (BSAHCM) intends to become an annual event. Sponsored by DaVita, a leading provider of kidney care in the U.S., teams consisting of three students each developed a strategy to take on a real-world business case related to health care management.
Vanderbilt’s team included Jennifer Rymer, who is pursuing an MD and an MBA, Avery C. Fisher, a second-year MBA candidate, and Jonathan Cook, a first-year MBA candidate. The team received a $1,000 award for their third-place finish.
A team from the University of California at Berkeley placed first, and a team from Northwestern placed second.
Teams were drawn from BSAHCM’s 10 member schools, which includes:

- Fuqua School at Duke University
- Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University
- Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley
- Harvard Business School
- Owen School of Graduate Management at Vanderbilt University
- University of Colorado Denver Business School
- Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania
- W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University
- Yale University School of Management
