Vanderbilt Business is known across the globe for its high caliber of students, faculty, and staff. In this edition of People of Vanderbilt, we spotlight MBA student Kacie Ryan, who shares a little about herself.
What’s your secret talent?
It’s not so secret, but I fly helicopters in the Army. It did not come naturally at first, so I’m really proud that I stuck with it and was able to even become an instructor pilot a few years ago. I guess the secret is that I used to sing. I was in an a cappella and show choir in high school and performed the national anthem at a few games in college. My singing is reserved for the car or to my dog nowadays though.
Who or what empowers you at Vanderbilt?
I am in awe of the kindness, inclusivity, and humbleness of my Owen classmates and professors. Every one of my peers has an amazing background and story that led them to Owen that I have loved getting to learn about and learn from. It is easy to get imposter syndrome in new settings like this, but my classmates have made me feel welcome and that my opinions and thoughts matter.
What’s your favorite way to connect with the Vanderbilt community?
I’ve helped with numerous community service projects with other Owen students out in the community. I love seeing the good that we can do as Owen students together to help the local area.
What’s something you’ve learned about yourself during your time at Vanderbilt?
I have done so much reflecting on my managerial and leadership skills! I am taking Managerial and Organizational Effectiveness (MOE) and Women and Leadership this module. Both have truly helped me learn about my strengths and weaknesses as a leader and how I can effectively manage them.
Looking back on your time here at Vanderbilt, what is one of your favorite memories, activities, or rituals?
One of my favorite memories so far at Owen was the Veterans Day Closing Bell. It was hosted by the Armed Forces Club and the veterans brought old military gear and pictures to share. It was really cool to be a part of that, getting to share what has been my life for the last eight years more with my classmates.
Looking forward, what are you most excited about this year?
I am very excited to be a swing fellow for the Management Communications course next year! I loved taking comms in my first mod at Owen and am excited to get to help the incoming first-year students prepare for their speeches and refine their communications skills.
Are you in a leadership role associated with Vanderbilt?
I am the incoming President of Owen Armed Forces Club and Assistant Lead Communications Fellow.
