While visiting Vanderbilt as part of his exploration of various graduate business programs, Collier Dobbs brought his family along. Sitting in a classroom with current students made an immediate and lasting impression. “What stood out was how the teachers knew each student’s name,” he says, “and the professional yet interpersonal nature of the classroom dialogue.

“In addition, the attention the rest of my family received during the visit was a strong indicator of Owen’s community. After the visit, it was a no-brainer to apply.”

As he built the skills to pursue a career in Finance, Collier’s initial impression only deepened during his year at Vanderbilt. “The connectivity of the Owen community has been one of my favorite parts of the program,” says the Alabama native. “The smaller classroom dynamic has produced open dialogue that benefited my learning experience. It also made getting to know my classmates easier.”

However, he adds, the strong sense of community doesn’t stem from class sizes alone. “The faculty have played a large part in crafting this environment,” Collier says. “In and out of class, they have always been supportive and have our best interests in mind. The community made my education much more engaging and enjoyable.”

The community, he notes, extends beyond individual programs, and Collier made the most of opportunities to build relationships with students in Vanderbilt’s MBA, MAcc, and Master of Marketing programs. “Having the opportunity to meet individuals from so many different paths has helped me grow personally and professionally, and was one of my favorite parts of the experience,” he says.

“The relationships with alumni were also a large factor in my success during the recruiting process,” he says. In fact, one of the best illustrations of the school’s community spirit was on display every time a classmate received a job offer. “The community just lifts up and celebrates them,” Collier recalls. “Whether it’s in the form of congratulations from your classmates or teacher, celebratory dinners, or just a simple high-five, it has been fulfilling to see my peers succeed and celebrate each other.”

Fun Fact: Collier worked on Capitol Hill as a Congressional intern.
