Getting a Compass to Navigate His Future

Agribusiness major refits his toolkit to launch Big Four accounting career

Vanderbilt MAcc 2019

You might say that Reese Perry ran the numbers when he decided to start a career in accounting. “I pursued [a MAcc] degree,” he says, “because of the high demand for accounting professionals and potential for job placement.” With a major in agribusiness and a minor in economics, he also believed that the degree would give him a specialized skillset that would complement the broader business foundation of his undergraduate curriculum.

Once he decided on a direction, Vanderbilt was a fairly easy choice. He found the small class sizes a refreshing change from the setting at his extremely large undergraduate university. In addition, says Reese, “The relationships with the Big Four accounting firms and the fact that the MAcc program is extremely dedicated to its students’ personal and professional development” were major draws.

“The program staff always have your best interests at heart and have been willing to help me improve as a professional or talk through career decisions with me. The Owen faculty are extremely available and are excited to facilitate learning.”

During his time in Nashville, Reese says he was able to expand his network and make connections that he believes will be lifelong. “I enjoyed participating in extracurricular activities with my classmates, whether it was intramurals or just hanging out,” he says. “We were able to support each other and develop together.”

Meanwhile, he equipped himself to launch his accounting career back in his native state. “The experience [at Vanderbilt],” he says, “gave me valuable knowledge and skills to begin my career, and I have completely transformed in terms of my professional development. I feel like I have all of the tools I need to navigate my future.”

Fun Fact: Reese grew up on a sheep ranch in South Texas. Reese also enjoys horseback riding, kayaking, and SCUBA diving.
