Prior to pursuing her MBA, Sarah Beth Bryant was the youngest charge nurse in the Pediatric Emergency Department at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. “I loved the operational aspects of the role,” she says, “and managing capacity and resources and solving problems in real time. That’s when I realized I wanted to make an impact beyond the bedside.
“I wanted to be someone in the boardroom who brought both business acumen and firsthand experience as a provider—a perspective often missing in hospital leadership. My goal was to bridge the gap between clinical care and executive decision making, using both empathy and strategic insight. I knew I needed credibility on the business side to do that effectively.”
Fortunately for Sarah Beth, a great educational option was just a few blocks from the hospital. She completed applications to other MBA programs, but ultimately, the only one she submitted was to Vanderbilt. “Owen just felt like home,” she explains. “Many top business schools offer similar academic experiences. What stood out to me about Owen was the people.”
Being part of a close, supportive community was especially important for someone like Sarah Beth, who had never taken a business class at any level before joining the program. “The Owen community made all the difference,” she says. “From small class sizes and engaged faculty to peer support and a strong alumni network, I never felt like just a number here. You don’t go to business school just for the academics; you go for the network. Every one of my favorite memories ties back to the people. The community made this experience special.”
Looking back while preparing to move into a new role, Sarah Beth says, “Owen gave me the tools, confidence, and network to make the leap from bedside nursing to consulting. I’ve built a solid foundation in strategy, operations, finance, and leadership that will serve me throughout my career.
“Beyond career outcomes, Owen also shaped my values around what kind of leader I want to be. I learned how to think more strategically, communicate more effectively, and lead with empathy. It also gave me the space to rediscover balance. I went from working night shifts and rarely having time with friends or family to building meaningful relationships and investing in personal growth. That shift in mindset will stay with me far beyond graduation.”
Fun Fact: Sarah Beth was a child model in Japan, where she spent the first eight years of her life.
